Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry was shy during high school and did not act. She began acting at Northwestern University to gain friends as she transferred from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness led her to California and she returned working on stage. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She was also cast in The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The part was offered an audition to the actress, despite the fact that she was a cousin to the character.
